BlueMed Initiative

BLUEMED is the research and innovation Initiative for promoting the blue economy in the Mediterranean Basin through cooperation. It is the strategy of reference for the Mediterranean countries to work together for a healthy, safe and productive Mediterranean Sea. The BLUEMED Initiative will contribute to the creation of new ‘blue’ jobs, social well being and a sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors through the implementation of its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, the BLUEMED SRIA.

The BLUEMED CSA Consortium is pleased to announce the opening of its Call for Strategic Start-up Actions on Blue Growth in the Mediterranean. The Call is open to entities who are willing to partner up with at least three other organisations from different countries, including one non-EU country and one private enterprise, to conduct a series of meetings leading up to a feasibility, foresight or pilot study on topics that are crucial to the future of Blue Growth in the Mediterranean, driven by the BLUEMED Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda. The BLUEMED Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (BLUEMED SRIA) is the foundation document of the BLUEMED Initiative. The BLUEMED SRIA addresses the crucial challenges that the Mediterranean Sea is facing and encompasses goals and actions to tackle them.

The Venice Declaration on Mediterranean Sea Cooperation undersigned by ten European countries on 16th October 2015 marks the official endorsement of the BLUEMED SRIA. Countries engage to coordinate and integrate efforts and align research and innovation strategies, programmes and activities, actively promoting synergies and complementarities among all stakeholders.

We acknowledge the importance of developing and promoting a shared vision of the Mediterranean Sea as a healthy, safe and productive common resource, so as to promote security, safety and prosperity of present and future generations via the BLUEMED Initiative. With the Valletta Declaration on Strengthening Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation through Research and Innovation signed on 4th May 2017 by the Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and of the European Union (EU), the BLUEMED Initiative enters the agendas of the countries of the whole Mediterranean Basin.

The BlueMed SRIA

The BLUEMED Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (BLUEMED SRIA) provides the tool for all public and private stakeholders involved in the development of the BLUEMED Initiative. The BLUEMED SRIA outlines a set of key challenges for the Mediterranean and particularly knowledge gaps, specific activities enabling the blue growth as well as measures for capacity creation and skills’ enhancement.

BlueMed Platforms

Public dialogue with concerned national stakeholders is essential for implementing the objectives of the BLUEMED Initiative and in particular for the monitoring and the update process of the SRIA. As a tool to ensure constant consultation, four thematic Platforms at Mediterranean level will be created.

National Pivots

National Pivots are key contributors to Platform operation, representatives of the different partner countries on the four specific platform themes. GSO BLUEMED Working Group

The GSO BLUEMED Working Group, established in the framework of Euro-Mediterranean Senior Officials Group in Research and Innovation, is the steering body of the BLUEMED Initiative. Co-chaired by the two chairs of the Union for the Mediterranean, EC-DG Research and Innovation and Jordan , in close cooperation with the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfMS) and joined by officially appointed delegates from Mediterranean countries, it replaces the role of the Strategic Board.

The Partnership

The BLUEMED CSA consortium is composed of partners from Cyprus, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. Partners represent Research Organizations, Research Funding Agencies and Ministries. The involvement of Funding Agencies and Research Organizations with experience in supporting and/or interfacing with different stakeholders, including policy-makers, private companies and civil society, is a fundamental spur for the implementation of the project’s activities in the framework of the BLUEMED Initiative.
